HGL Construction served as the prime contractor for this 2.5-acre project to expand approximately 60 feet of the hardscape to provide a new walkway with trees and landscaping beds as well as an accessible entryway into the Performing Arts Center. Work was performed on an active college campus requiring coordination and communication to ensure campus end-users were not impacted during construction activities.

Major features of work included installation of new storm drainage, area drains at the planting areas and roof drain flumes to allow for concealed drainage along the main walkway; decorative pole lighting and lighted bollards to illuminate the llee walkway during evening events; modification of existing islands and medians to allow for smoother vehicle flow; colored and stamped concrete at the entry to the Performing Arts Center along with brick seat walls and decorative metal benches; and modification of existing walks and landscaping to the second main entryway. Landscape grading includes placement and final grading of imported topsoil for the entire project area.

In order to minimize disruption and ensure campus end-user safety, HGL sectioned off work sites with barricades and fences. Detours and alternate routes/pathways were provided around the closed areas to facilitate circulation.

In addition to working around campus end-users, this site was located adjacent to an active construction project being completed by another contractor. HGL had to coordinate and collaborate with the adjacent contractor as HGL’s work sites were located in areas occupied by the contractor. HGL shared schedules and held partnering meetings to plan and sequence HGL’s work activities. When the adjacent contractor fell behind the approved schedule, HGL submitted a revised Phasing Plan and Work Plan identifying alternate work sites that could be completed so HGL’s schedule was not impacted. Even with delays caused by the adjacent contractor, HGL completed this project within the original duration.
